I have a long-time relationship with Martin County. I have been a visitor and vacationer; resident and property owner; parent and husband; business owner and volunteer; and now Candidate for Martin County Commission, District 5!
My family has three generations residing in our beloved county. My wife Liz and I are blessed to both have our parents living here in Palm City; it is so wonderful for our children to have all their grandparents sharing in their growing up. This has made life for us truly Paradise!
During the last 10 months of campaigning, I have had the opportunity to speak with many wonderful people. One thing’s for certain, the most important issue facing Martin County residents, is the downturn in our local economy. This is driven by the real estate markets near collapse, which has many of our neighbors struggling to make ends meet. Families are losing their homes and local businesses are closing. Good people are being forced to move away from the community they love, because of the ever increasing cost of everyday necessities, and the lack of quality job opportunities.
We must begin to stabilize our economy by, streamlining county government, and diversify our economy away from “rooftop development” to a broad spectrum of economic development. Martin County can no longer be perceived as “Anti Business.” Working within our Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, we need to support our existing local businesses, while also encouraging new legitimate businesses to locate here. This will ease the burden of taxation on our existing residents, while also creating employment opportunities for our young people and those out of work.
There are many things about Martin County that make this a wonderful community to live. We have the state’s top school system, beautiful beaches and parks, and thousands of acres of unspoiled natural open space. Without a stable economy and a secure future for our families, our quality of life is vulnerable.
